Playing Chess in Hanover: Clubs, Tournaments and History
Hanover is one of northern Germany's most tradition-rich chess cities: in 1902 it hosted the 13th Congress of the German Chess Federation with world-class players such as Harry Pillsbury and David Janowski, and the Hannoverscher Schachklub, founded in 1876, still plays today under a new name. This guide collects what is actually accessible in today's club scene. Where something could not be verified, it is not listed here.
Chess clubs in Hanover
The Niedersächsischer Schachverband (Lower Saxony Chess Federation) runs the clubs in the Hanover district. The following selection shows clubs whose game night is publicly listed. A dash means the club does not publish the time permanently, so it's worth checking the club's website.
| Club | District | Game night |
|---|---|---|
| HSK Lister Turm | List | Friday, 6:30–11:00 pm |
| Schachfreunde Ricklingen | Ricklingen | Friday from 7:15 pm |
| Schachklub Anderten von 1922 | Misburg-Anderten | Friday from 4:30 pm (youth), from 6:00 pm (adults) |
The complete list of all member clubs is kept by the Niedersächsischer Schachverband. Please check each club's website for current dates – game nights regularly shift during school holidays.
A note for a first visit: HSK Lister Turm meets at the Freizeitheim Lister Turm, Walderseestraße 100 – Friday evening in room 16 is considered the heart of club life, with blitz and rapid formats alongside classical games. Schachfreunde Ricklingen plays at the Stadtteilzentrum Ricklingen, Anne-Stache-Allee 7, and also runs a team on Lichess. Schachklub Anderten meets at the Bürgerhaus Misburg, Seckbruchstr. 20 – there, the afternoon starts with the youngest players before the adults take over from 6:00 pm.
Playing chess outdoors: chess tables and meeting spots
A municipal directory of public chess tables, as exists in some other German cities, could not be confirmed for Hanover. The most reliable way to find an open game remains one of the club evenings – especially Friday, when three of the clubs listed are ready to play.
Anyone wanting to play on the go between districts is best served by a foldable travel set that fits in any bag and is ready to use at almost any table. Anyone wanting to drop by as a guest will find several addresses across the city on Fridays – from List to Ricklingen to Misburg-Anderten.
Tournaments and open events
The Hanover chess district has a packed autumn program: in September the district team championships start in both round-robin and Swiss formats, followed in October by the district individual championships and the team championships in blitz and rapid chess. On top of that come the youth championships in the U12 to U20 age groups, which the district organizes over the course of the season.
The district is active beyond the state capital, too: the Lehrte youth series and the 42nd Lehrte Open already took place in early September and show how densely packed the tournament calendar around Hanover is throughout the year – from rapid chess team competitions to open county championships in the surrounding area.
Anyone entering a tournament for the first time should know beforehand what equipment is required. The dimensions are not a matter of taste but are regulated – see our article on the DSB and FIDE tournament chess standards.
Chess for children and teenagers
With more than 30 children and teenagers, Schachklub Anderten has built one of the largest youth sections in the region, with its own U20 and U14 teams in league play – training on Fridays from as early as 4:30 pm, an hour before the adult evening in the same building. HSK Lister Turm trains its youngsters on Mondays from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, split into beginners in room 22 and advanced juniors in room 20, plus free play for all strength levels on Fridays from 5:00 pm.
Anyone wanting to bring their child for the first time will find fixed, recurring sessions at both clubs rather than a one-off taster. Getting started at home requires little at first: a board of a sensible size and pieces that smaller hands can grip well. Which square size suits which king height is covered in our article on chessboard size.
Hanover and chess history
From 21 July to 12 August 1902, Hanover hosted the 13th Congress of the German Chess Federation, one of the strongest international tournaments of its time with 18 top players. The Polish player David Janowski won convincingly with a run of five wins in the last five rounds, ahead of Harry Nelson Pillsbury – finishing second for the fifth time in six tournaments – and the Briton Henry Atkins in third place. The field also included the young American guard around Frank Marshall, William Napier and Rudolf Swiderski. On a rest day of the tournament, Pillsbury also played 21 simultaneous blindfold games against strong opponents – an anecdote still told in chess circles today.
The city's club history also goes back a long way: the Hannoverscher Schachklub, founded in 1876, qualified four times for the final round of the German team championship and became German team champion in 1959. After years as a section of Post SV Hannover, the club merged in 2011 with SK Lister Turm to form today's HSK Lister Turm – so anyone playing in room 16 at the Freizeitheim Lister Turm on a Friday today is continuing a tradition that goes back to the 1870s. Among the club's defining figures is honorary member Carl Carls, whose name is still associated with a well-known system in the English Opening.

From Janowski and Pillsbury to your own board
Anyone who has played with borrowed equipment at a Hanover club evening quickly notices the difference to a well-made set of their own. For a regular game night, our handcrafted wooden sets are a good fit – solid wood, visible grain, pieces with noticeable weight. Anyone traveling between List, Ricklingen and Misburg-Anderten is best served by a foldable travel set that fits in any bag. And for a gift to a club member after a tournament win, it's worth looking at our engraved sets: a dedication in the wood outlasts any trophy. Schachatelier is a Berlin brand, and shipping is from Berlin. Take a look around.
